Increase Low compensation for early childhood educators
We are pushing for a federal government-funded 10% salary increase for all early learning childcare employees.
Early childhood educators have a long history of leaving child care centers and family child care homes in favor of public school settings, where they can make more money and receive benefits for performing the same type of work, due to the early childhood education (ECE) systems in our country’s persistent and systematic underfunding. Even so, this well-worn road has continuously widened disparities and widened the gap between early childhood education sites, age groups, and financing sources.
Contact your local representatives and ask them to take action on the issue.
Stabilizing the Workforce in High-Quality Early Education
To attract and keep a high caliber child care team, adequate compensation is necessary. However, compared to other teachers, child care providers often make far less money. The average public school teacher salary in Florida is $54,090 as of July 25, 2023, but the range typically falls between $45,165 and $65,969. Salary ranges can vary widely depending on the city and many other important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, the number of years you have spent in your profession. Base on the Bureau of Labor data The average childcare worker salary in Florida ranges between $21,000 – $39,000, with the average total compensation falling around $28,520 per year as of May 2022 data. This is almost 50% less than the average for other educators in the public-school lane.
The lack of staff is unquestionably the biggest concern facing the childcare sector. Numerous other industries are also in desperate need of more workers but are frequently unable to find them. The childcare industry is not an exception. From an efficiency standpoint, there is very little that operators can do because the business is one in which technological developments, at least in the near future, are unable to help. To our knowledge, licensing doesn’t currently allow robots or Ai to count as a staff in classroom ratios so early learning educators and caregivers are considered essential workers for this reason. The operator level of this boils down to the fact that some centers in some places are forced to impose an enrollment cap because of a lack of staff and it is an issue that we all have to address.
